The Best in Australian Cuisine

Australia is one of the most unique and interesting locations to visit in the world. There are several things to explore and try in the “land down under”, and one of them would be the traditional food found there. Australian food is influenced by English cuisines, although over time, it has developed its own style and taste. Many of the traditional Australian foods have evolved into unique dishes that can only be found there.

The influence of English cuisine can be seen in most of the dishes in Australia. This is because the history of the island-continent can be traced from English immigrants. One of the best examples of English influence can be found with takeout foods such as fish and chips. However, many locals will attest that their version is very different. English influence can also be found with the afternoon tea time and the bangers and mashed served in various pubs and bars.

Australia is also a land that is rich with the quality and quantity of seafood. The island has an 11 million square kilometer fishing zone which gives it access to bountiful seafood. While many of the seafood are exported, most of the best kinds are served on the island. There are several kinds of seafood served in Australia for consumption including lobsters, prawn, tuna, salmon, abalone, oysters, prawns and many more. Most of these foods can be found in the coastal towns of Australia.

There are also unique food sources that can only be found in Australia. One example would be the use of Kangaroo as a meat source. Kangaroo meat is very lean with more protein and very little fat. It is also very tender. There are also several fruits locally grown there, such as indigenous peaches, plums, berries and many other fruits.

Most of the traditional food used in Australia is made up of the local meats and fruits found in the outback, eaten by the local aborigines. The ingredients used in this meal, called ‘bush tucker’, are made up of several local fruits and berries and meat from local animals including kangaroos, emus and crocodiles.

Iconic food types in Australia include the vegemite, Anzac biscuits and the Pavlova. The vegemite is a dark brown food paste made from yeast extract. It is usually spread on toast and biscuits. The Anzac biscuit is made from coconut, oats and golden syrup. It was named Anzac after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps established in World War 1. The Pavlova is a meringue based dessert named after the Russian ballet dancer, Anna Pavlova.
